Regattas at Cedar Lake Yacht Club
Steve Sheck wins ILYA I-20 Invite, with Steven Catlin chasing
The Inland20 Class convened from the east and west at centrally
located Cedar Lake, Indiana last weekend for the 2010 ILYA Invite Regatta.
This was the second time the ILYA I-20 Invite was held at Cedar Lake Yacht
Club and the fourth time they have hosted an Inland20 class regatta. The
famous Cedar Lake Indiana hospitality was in full swing all weekend, from
dinner upon arrival on Friday night, full run of the facilities, free
housing to many sailors, and a full weekend meal package including Saturday
night's pork-chop dinner. A few storms rumbled through on Friday night,
but sailors awoke to clear skies on Saturday morning. With the threat
of additional storms throughout the weekend (which have been quite typical
for the Midwest this year), the sailors elected to sail four races on
Saturday. Conditions varied from light to gusty, and were certainly shifty
and challenging. Racing was tight between the top five boats including
young Steven Catlin (Neenah), John Spargo (Mendota), Stefan Schmidt (Mendota)
and Willie Crear (Minnetonka). However, it was reining class champion
Steve Scheck and his crew Leigh Leonard who led the pack with the most
wins and most consistent scores of the day. Come Sunday morning the race
committee and sailors were happy that four races had been completed the
day before as a looming storm front stretching from Wisconsin to Missouri
required the race committee to abandon races for the day. The final results
had Steve and Leigh taking away another regatta victory. Steven Catlin
finished the regatta in second place after a winning the tie breaker with
John Spargo. Rumor has it that defending champs Steve and Leigh will not
be able to attend the upcoming ILYA Inland20 Champs in Neenah, so odds
are on local sailor Catlin to be the favorite. The Inland20 class wishes
to thank Regatta Chair Pat Kardos, the entire Cedar Lake Yacht Club and
ILYA PRO Mike Sherin for a fabulous event. We look forward to seeing everyone
in Neenah this August!
A hot time at Cedar, IN
Eleven I-20s sailed the ILYA Invite out of Cedar Lake , IN.
It was a hot time, with temperatures in the upper 80’s, fairly high dew point, and 100% sunshine. Fortunately, there was wind. We did a set of back-to-backs Saturday morning with wind generally SW around 5-8 mph. There was the occasional large puff from nowhere, and of course some big holes. For the afternoon, the wind was a little more to the right, and up a few more mph. Another set of back-to-backs, and the fleet retreated to the shade at the club.
Sunday morning brought a storm bearing down on the lake, so we called it a regatta. The storm hit a few minutes after the scheduled warning signal.
Our hosts at Cedar were awesome! Many competitors were given housing, the meals were a great bargain, and many volunteers chipped in to make everything happen.
Thanks to regatta chair Pat Kardos, who also did RC duty assisting PRO Mike Sherin (thanks Mike!), and all the members of CLYC. If you’ve never been to Cedar, you’re missing a great time.
